Chinese Community Donates and Collects Prom Dresses for Students

Prom season is coming up! KCAL Insurance Agency has teamed up with the Industry Sheriff Station’s Youth Activities League (YAL) for another Dress Shopping Day! This event is where new, lightly worn dresses, suits, shoes, and more, are collected to help underprivileged students from low-income families attend prom. Having a nice dress and a nice suit to wear to prom just makes it that much more memorable!
Many volunteers and sponsors involved with this event include Charlie Klinakis, President of Youth Activities League, Joseph Chang from Hacienda La Puente Unified School District’s Board of Education, and Ray Jan, CEO/Executive Director of the Rosemead Chamber of Commerce. They are only several among many who came to support the event.
Angela Chang, one of the sponsors of the event, member of the Youth Activities League, as well as the Chief Strategy Officer of KCAL Insurance Agency, mentioned that YAL and KCAL has been hosting this event for the past several years. It’s so touching to be able to see others donate their dresses from so many different places across the nation. Not only have they received donations from different areas of California, but they have even received donations that were shipped from New York!
This year, they have collected more than 300 prom dresses and jewelry, hundreds of pairs of high heels, and on top of that, a lot of shoe companies from all over the country were more than happy to donate new high heels, giving the students an endless amount of shoes to choose from.
Although they were able to collect a lot of dresses this year, they still hope to be able to collect more suits in the future. Kenny Chang, President of KCAL, stated that these dress donations really mean a lot to the students and the families receiving them. These events have helped nearly 100 students and it’s a great opportunity for the community to give back and to help out others in the community who may not be able to afford these fancy dresses and suits.
After the event is over, the remaining dresses will be donated to the Marine Corps so that these dresses aren’t just left in storage collecting dust!
To the students who haven’t found their perfect prom dress yet, there is one more chance to attend a Dress Shopping Day on April 12! It will be located at 15718 Rausch Rd, City of Industry, CA 91744 (Industry Security Services).
